Staying Hydrated in Winter
While winter’s weather may seem to offer ample moisture, the chilly season’s conditions actually have a severe dehydrating effect on skin.
A lack of humidity in the air, coupled with an increase in exposure to indoor heating and long, hot showers, can quickly create flaky, cracked and itchy skin.
Much like you revamp your wardrobe to adjust for the onset of winter weather, it’s equally important to practice preparedness when it comes to your skincare regimen.
Make sure you are implementing the right products and facial treatments for the season, in addition to being mindful of lifestyle choices that can help skin retain its necessary moisture.
Here are a few suggestions for keeping complexions calm, hydrated and happy when the weather outside is frightful:
Ready your skincare regimen. It’s important to adjust your usual morning and evening skincare routine to account for the change in climate. While this doesn’t require an overhaul, it may benefit you to temporarily swap one product for another or add in a product to keep skin in its best, balanced state. For example, consider changing out your usual night cream for a healing formula designed for dehydrated, sensitive skin, like Control Corrective Skin Nourishing Balm, which is botanical-based and targets moisturizing, calming and healing. Additionally, if you aren’t already using one, add a serum to your regimen, such as the Control Corrective Firming Tri-Peptide Serum or Cellular Repair Serum, which both plump dehydrated, dull winter skin and reduce trans-epidermal water loss and help skin retain moisture, respectively. Also, a reparative and soothing mask like the Control Corrective Sensitive Skin Enzyme Mask can be used several times per week to offer skin a relieving respite from the harsh conditions and a hydrating boost.
Don’t fear exfoliation. While exfoliating products may seem too “harsh” for dehydrated and flaky skin, they are actually essential in helping to clear away dead, dry skin to make room for moisturizing products. That said, keep your sensitive winter complexion in mind when choosing an exfoliator and opt for a gentle scrub like Control Corrective Cucumber Bead Cleanser, which deep cleans without irritation or abrasion with jojoba beads. Beware harsh, natural scrubs, such as those with apricot pits. Exfoliate no more than twice a week.
Make a monthly date with your esthetician. Having a monthly facial on the books is always a good idea, but when the climate is especially detrimental to the skin, like in winter, it’s even more essential. She can assist you in selecting the right products to counteract flare-ups caused by the conditions and perform treatments to help your skin react better to the seasonal onslaught.Control Corrective’s Classic Nourishing Facial and Revitalizing Cream Peel are great winter picks due to their gentle, hydrating and calming benefits.
Make pro-moisture lifestyle adjustments. Keeping skin healthy and hydrated during the winter months extends beyond just proper skincare. Consider the following lifestyle tips to complement your winter skincare routine:
- Wash face with lukewarm, rather than hot, water and avoid LONG showers
- Use a humidifier in the home to help add necessary moisture
- Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive alcohol intake
- Choose soft, breathable fabrics for scarves and hats that touch your face to avoid irritation
- Don’t forget the sunscreen – even on the dreariest day, the sun’s harmful rays are still effective!
