Resolution-Stunning Skin in 2016

Resolutions for the New Year can run the gamut, but most correspond to committing in some way to your health, your physical appearance or your overall sense of happiness.

That said, you can pretty much strike a home run when you resolve to take better care of your skin.

When you get serious about making strides to improve your complexion, you’ll 1) notice improvements in the health of your skin and even possibly avoid serious health concerns, such as skin cancer; 2) reap the benefits of a more attractive appearance due to the minimization of skin issues, such as blemishes or redness; and finally, 3) increase your overall happiness by feeling confident and beautiful in your own skin.

Meeting the goal of taking good care of your skin doesn’t have to mean draining your bank account or eking out hours per week in your already busy schedule. It can be as simple as using sunscreen regularly or remembering to follow through with your regimen, without fail.

Consider taking on one or all the following resolutions to improve your complexion this year:

  • Find the right skincare regimen, and stick to it. If you’re in need of finding a more “serious” or “grownup” skincare regimen (rather than your usual “buy whatever’s on sale” behavior), your first step should be visiting an esthetician.  Based upon your responses to specific questions and a physical examination, she’ll be able to point you in the right direction regarding products that will benefit your particular skin profile. Whether you opt to spring for professional products or drugstore alternatives, the most important thing is to find a combination of products that work well for your skin and stick to a morning and evening regimen. This will not only help skin achieve the results you desire (clarity, youthfulness, glow), but also help maintain and defend against the issues you detest (acne, wrinkles, sun damage).
  • Consider an upgrade to your regimen. Sticking to your skincare regimen does not allow for subtracting core products, but additions are definitely welcome! Change up your regular routine by trying a mask one to two times a week, which, depending on the type, can help hydrate dry skin, calm inflammation and redness, reduce oil or create a more youthful appearance. Also, pay attention to any adjustments that need to be made with a change in seasons. For example, you may want to consider adding a redness-reducing product like Control’s Redness Relief Serum to offset winter’s dehydrating and skin-irritating climate or an SPF lip balm like Control’s Hydrating Lip Conditioner SPF 15 during the sunnier months.
  • Stop skipping sunscreen. Never, ever, ever OK. You should be applying sunscreen every morning and reapplying during times of heavy sun exposure. Don’t forget the backs of your hands, your ears and the tops of your feet, if exposed!
  • Exfoliate. You have to get rid of the old to make room for the new – even when it comes to your skin. Exfoliation helps rid the skin’s surface of dead cells and other dirt and debris to allow new, youthful skin to emerge, while simultaneously reducing the appearance of acne, fine lines and dark spots. Consider it like a detailing for your skin, and commit to it twice a week.
  • Break bad skin habits. If you’re serious about stepping up your skincare game, you can’t still practice bad habits. While there’s a laundry list of skincare DON’Ts, our biggest pet peeves include sleeping in full makeup, touching your face (aside from applying skincare or makeup), picking at blemishes and DIY skincare treatments. Don’t. Do. It.

Cheers to making good on your skincare resolutions this year!
